Top things to do in Halton, Lancashire
1. Walk the Halton and River Lune circular
Exploring the River Lune around Halton is one of the most peaceful ways to spend a few hours outdoors, with countryside views reaching out towards the beautiful Forest of Bowland.
This 8.4km loop trail starts in Halton and follows the riverbank out towards the Crook o’Lune picnic site. The route then picks up the Lune Valley Ramble at the Thirlmere Aqueduct before doubling back along the opposite bank. Finally, you’ll pass the old railway line and head over Halton Bridge.
Top tip: The walk should take around two and a half hours and can be boggy in places (you are up north after all!), so it’s worth wearing proper walking footwear and bringing waterproofs just in case.

2. Stop to see an exhibition at Halton Mill
Halton Mill is a converted riverside mill turned co-working and events space, with events and exhibitions taking place year round. If you’re looking for something cultural or creative to do on a rainy day, make sure to add Halton Mill to your list!
The venue also hosts regular activities like yoga, pottery workshops, and a monthly repair café.
3. Explore local food and drink
Halton has a small selection of local pubs, cafés, and restaurants that are worth a try when in the area. Here are a few we recommend:
- The Greyhound at Halton. A relaxed, dog-friendly village pub serving home-cooked food, from Sunday roasts to stone-baked pizzas.
- Woodies. A coffee and bakery hut by the Crook o’Lune viewpoint, making it a great stop on the Halton and River Lune circular walk!
- The Red Door Café. A cosy spot for homemade cakes and a hearty breakfast right in the heart of the village.
4. See the Halton Cross at St Wilfrid’s Church
The Halton Cross, standing in the churchyard of St Wilfrid’s Church, is a protected, scheduled Anglo-Saxon monument. This impressive piece of history has carvings of scenes from the Norse legend of Sigurd the dragon-slayer.
In his book Vikings in North-west England: The Artefacts, Archaeologist B. J. N. Edwards said the monument is “probably the clearest representation of part of the Sigurd story outside Scandinavia”.
Fun fact: The main shaft of the cross dates back to the 10th or 11th century, incorporating older fragments from as early as the 8th century! It’s definitely worth a visit for any local history buff.
