A remarkable season, a historic promotion and a story that brings together people, place and ambition.
There was plenty to celebrate at Workington Town Ladies Rugby League this weekend as the team secured promotion to the Women’s National Championship with a memorable 24–12 victory over Wakefield Trinity.
Genesis Homes are a proud sponsor of Workington Town Ladies and have been delighted to support the team throughout their journey. This season’s success has also given us the chance to celebrate someone a little closer to home with our Planning & Pre-Development Manager, Josie Scrimgour, being the team’s Vice Captain.
After an outstanding campaign, Workington went into Sunday’s final having lost just two league fixtures. With promotion on the line, the team delivered when it mattered most, overcoming Wakefield to become Northern League One champions and secure their place in the National Championship next season.
Josie scored Workington’s opening try in the final to help set her side on their way to a historic victory, as well as being named Player of the Match.
Backing our people
For Genesis, supporting Workington Town Ladies is about more than putting our name to a team. We want to support the people and organisations that make a real contribution to the places where we build, and help shine a light on the achievements happening within those communities.
Supporting Josie and her teammates has been a brilliant opportunity to do just that, and we’re proud to have been alongside them during such a successful season.
A personal connection to Workington
The story also has a particularly personal connection for Genesis Managing Director, Nicky Gordon.
Nicky grew up following Workington Town and even spent a brief spell playing in the academy at Derwent Park in 2000 before moving on to Warrington Wolves in dual code partnership with Sale Sharks. More than two decades later, he found himself back at Derwent Park to watch the semi-final – this time as Managing Director of a Cumbrian housebuilder, and watching a member of the Genesis team lead the Workington Town Ladies side as Vice Captain.
For Nicky, it was something of a full-circle moment. He said:
“There’s something quite powerful about seeing how things come full circle. As a young lad, I was passionate about Workington Town and dreamed big about where rugby and life could take me. Years later, I’m back at Derwent Park watching someone from our own team pursue her ambition at such a high level. That’s what makes supporting local sport so important to us. It’s about people, ambition and being part of the communities around us.”
Proud to be part of West Cumbria
Workington and West Cumbria are an important part of our story.
From our completed developments at Beckstone, Rheda and Farries Field, Stainburn to Derwent Rise in Seaton that’s currently under construction, we are not simply building homes in the area – we want to be part of the communities we are helping to grow.
That means supporting local organisations, investing in community initiatives, creating opportunities and getting involved in the things that matter to the people who live there.
Sport has a huge role to play in that. It brings people together, creates opportunities and gives individuals and teams the chance to achieve something they can be proud of. Workington Town Ladies’ promotion is a fantastic example of what can happen when ambition, teamwork and determination come together.
And for Genesis, it is something we are proud to support.
Congratulations to Josie, the whole Workington Town Ladies squad and everyone behind the team on a fantastic season.
