Our flagship development celebrated with traditional topping out ceremony

Posted on: December 6, 2019

Our flagship development, St. Cuthbert’s, Wigton is nearing completion. To mark this auspicious occasion, Simon Whitwham and Bob Bishopp of Cumberland Building Society joined MD, Nicky Gordon in a topping out ceremony.

This event is a builders rite, traditionally held when the last beam (or its equivalent) is placed atop a structure during its construction. In the case of a new housing development, the practice of ‘topping out’ a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree or leafy branch on the topmost wood or iron beam in a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction. As is usual, a toast was made during the ceremony.

Nicky Gordon, MD commented “It seems like only yesterday that we formed Genesis Homes, presented our business plan to the Cumberland Building Society and subsequently started work on our first development at Wigton. This 74-home scheme has certainly exceeded our expectations, being nearly sold out in just over two years. The topping out ceremony signifies a milestone in our business and is the culmination of a lot of hard work. We now have five live developments, and I hope there’ll be many more ‘topping outs’ in the months and years ahead as we continue our upward trajectory and our business plan realises its ambitions – much earlier than expected!”

Simon Whitwham, General Manager, Cumberland Building Society added “We’re delighted to have supported Genesis Homes in bringing this housing development to life. Its success is testament to the focus of the whole team at Genesis. We wish them success with their other live developments and future aspirations.”
