Kirkby Lonsdale is located within the rural county of Cumbria on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and a short drive away from the picturesque Lake District. Less than 6 miles from Junction 36 of the M6, Kirkby Lonsdale is easily accessible from all directions via the A65.

Approximately 17 miles northwest of Lancaster and 13 miles southeast of Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale is close to larger nearby towns as well as some of the most beautiful places in northern England. But actually, you don’t have to stray far from Kirkby to find interesting spots, arresting scenery and lots to do.

What is there to do in Kirkby Lonsdale?

Around Kirkby Lonsdale you’ll find a number of natural landscapes where you can walk, run, ride, or try other adventure activities on offer. At around 30 minutes’ drive away, you can find plenty of places to explore in the Lake District at Windermere, Lakeside and Newby Bridge, and Bowness-on-Windermere which are all west of Kirkby Lonsdale.

South of the Lakes, Arnside and Silverdale sit on the coast of Morecambe Bay offering stunning views of the estuary and southern Cumbria beyond. To the east, the Howgill’s then the Yorkshire Dales loom over the town and half an hour’s drive will find you at Horton in Ribblesdale, the starting point of the Yorkshire Dales three peaks challenge. Climb Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in any order in under 12 hours to complete this fun local challenge.

Closer to the town, the pretty River Lune meanders along to the east offering shorter walks in Kirkby Lonsdale that follow the riverside pathway. Take a peek over infamous Devil’s Bridge to the plunging rocks and fast water below or follow the river north to Ruskin’s View, up Radical Steps, where he proclaimed this area to be the prettiest in all England.

There is no train station in the village but Oxenholme Station in Kendal is less than 20 minutes’ drive away and there are currently six different bus routes connecting Kirkby with both the smaller surrounding villages and the larger hub towns.

There is one doctors surgery in Kirkby Lonsdale and two dentists, with the nearest hospital being Westmorland General Hospital in nearby Kendal. There are also two veterinary clinics that serve the town. Kirkby Lonsdale has one supermarket, Booths, which has plenty of parking, but there is a butchers, a bakery, a greengrocer, post office, ice cream parlour, confectioners and stationers all within the town. You’ll find several hair salons, clothes and footwear shops, a zero waste shop, bookshop, and choice of gift shops too.
